I could not put this book down! Misti Proffitt Thompson kept me on edge throughout as she told the story of her sister, Stephanie's disappearance, and the courageous resilience, persistence, and hope she and their mom refused to give up on in their unending search in either finding Stephanie, or learning the answers to her whereabouts, even despite the infuriating obstacles they faced with a man she was involved with as well as corrupt local authorities. I received this book as a gift from a friend. We had met Misty together, and she thought I would like to have the book, since Misty had shared the idea and progress with us when we met her. I picked it up to read the other night because I could not fall asleep. It was on my summer reading list. I hoped to read a section and then fall asleep. That did not happen. I read the book in its entirety. I could not put it down. It had the intrigue of a mystery, but it also had the spiritual lessons learned through this real life experience. I could feel the frustrations of Misty’s family as they lived through these 55 days of uncertainty, but also the frustrations of living with a person who is self-destructive through addictions. It was an amazing book and taught me that we are not alone. The veil between our living world and the spirit world has become even thinner than when Misty and Stephanie first experienced it so many years ago..
Misty Thompson’s book, By Your Side, is a phenomenally written, heartfelt journey about love, loss, addiction, and family bonds. Misty chronicles her sister’s disappearance with accurate detail and an appropriate amount of skepticism towards the investigators responsible for solving the case of her sister’s disappearance. Misty’s re-telling of a tragic story is a brave, page turning series of events and emotions that truly engage and inspire its reader. Beyond being a story about loss, it is also a story of hope and connection with the spirit world. A story that helps its readers understand that loss, while always heartbreaking, can also bring with it a sense of connection with the spirit world and a deeper connection with loved ones, both present and deceased. I read this book after meeting Misty - a gentle, sweet soul - at a conference. Sometimes, there are things that happen to us in life that don't get wrapped up neatly with a happy ending, and many happen with plenty of collateral damage. Her pain is raw, and personally I found it wrenching to get through for the depth of the pain that seemed to continue. I actually had scary dreams after reading this, to the point I had to set the book aside. I know there are bad people out there, but this was so intense and dark. My only irritation was that I found it hard sometimes to track chronologically. I also wanted to know - without judgement - what exactly her sister had done in her lifetime..... It was alluded to that "she had done things" or made some choices, but I found myself wanting to know specifics not so I would judge her, but in a book like this where we're getting to know a character, I think it's OK to be truthful. It would have helped me feel more empathy and have a fuller understanding for her too. Keeping that part in the dark short-circuited my ability to really get to know her as a full person. I give Misty a ton of credit for sharing this painful family story publicly. I hope it helps anyone who has suffered a similar loss.
Not your usual true crime...no resolution. Left wondering about a lot of the key players. Lost me with the psychic stuff.
This is about lost. The author relates the lost of her younger sister and her road to healing. The latter part of this book gets into some paranormal nonsense but anyone who has lost a love one can relate to her story.
Well written. Sad but gripping at the same time.
It's a story that makes you think about several real life issues. The story tells about the journey that each family member travels due to the actions and choices they make. It goes into depth of one particular persons life and how these events changed her calling.
