An unprecedented, behind-the-scenes glimpse into the airline world, Flying A Novel traces the lives of two young women as they "fly the line" for Pan Am in the 1970s, where they learn that living-like flying-takes more courage than they ever imagined. Spanning locations around the globe, Flying takes the reader along for the ride, from decadent crew parties in Africa to intrigue at misty pagodas in Burma, a searing romance at an archaeological dig in Tahiti, and the heart-rending fall of Saigon. This is a story about the unsung heroes and the heartbreaks of the airline industry in its final glamour days, as well as addiction to living life on the razor's edge. It is also about the nature of family, heroism and love, and what it really means to be a citizen of the world. But ultimately, it celebrates that exciting, terrifying moment when an airplane hits rotation speed and lifts off the runway. It's called flying, and it will never be this way again.

Flying Paula Helfrich Rebecca Sprecher Books

A novel with all the elements of fictional success with one caveat; one must wonder how much fiction had to be added to the truth to make this a novel! Spanning decades, centuries actually, oceans, continents and wars, this is really a saga built on the legend of Pan Am World Airlines, love, loss and heroism. The crews of Pan Am, the Vietnam War, the instability of the Middle East, it's all there! Birthright doesn't alway define how family comes to be, formed through friendships, experience, love and maybe need. We all have those who have touched us somehow who by choice is now considered our family, a part of the inner sanctum, whether they are here in the present or passed on. This chronicle of a time not so long ago, should be cherished for it's message, I Mua.

Flying Paula Helfrich Rebecca Sprecher Books Reviews

I was a stewardess for Pan American for 14 years, based in D.C., Boston, New York, and L.A. The stories told in "Flying A Novel" brought back many wonderful memories. The book is well written and historically accurate. The main characters, Zoe and Sally, reminded me of so many of the women I flew with -- adventurous, good-natured, and talented. I'd recommend it to anyone who has an interest in what it was like to work in Pan Am's World.
I haven't read it yet, but knew Paula, and know she would write a great book!!!!!!
When I heard about this book, I immediately downloaded it on my and started reading, even tho I was in the middle of another novel. As a former Pan Am employee, ground crew in Honolulu, it brought back so many wonderful and some sad memories. It's the first time I've cried while reading a book in a long time, and when I finished the book, I went right back to the beginning and started again. I just couldn't get enough.
While I did not know the authors while working at Pan Am, I did meet Paula in Hilo, Hawaii years later where she was an astute businesswoman. And although I knew she had been a stew for Pan Am, I never knew of her adventures. Bravo Paula, you wrote an amazing account of the glory days when flying was an adventure and not just transportation. Working for Pan Am was among the best days of my life. Please get started on your next book!
Anyone who flew in the 70's and 80's will be able to identify with the adventures, heartbreak, personal turmoil and joy of flying amid the world events of the era. Personally, I flew for 20 years for Eastern Airlines, and, although the place names may be different the experience was the same. We all knew characters like Zoe and Sally, and we all were effected by crashes, wars, loves lost, all-night flights, layovers where you slept, drank, partied, played tourist and learned to love hotel layover living. We were at home in a galley and only had to worry about the occasional threat of a hijacking. Read this book as a piece of history; when passengers dressed to travel, when flight attendants smiled and loved their jobs, when the world of aviation was exciting, when security was minimal, and as a window into some significant historical events that defined our age. The book made me smile and remember some of the best years of my life. And that is well worth the price.
Excelleny read! Well written. I am a retired flight attendant, so it really held significance for me! While reading you can really envision the people involved! Great book!
As a former Pan Am stewardess myself, hailing from the era depicted in this book, take it from me, "Flying-A Novel" is much MUCH more than a novel.

Indeed, with the exception of the fictional characters (most based on very real people), this is a valid & vidid account of actual events--some widely known to history and others well-kept secrets until now.

Authors, Paula Helfrich & Rebecca Sprecher bring to life adventures most of us can't even imagine, but trust me, because I too was THERE, you will not be reading the drummed-up nonsense of Hollywood. This book is as real as fiction gets and it's as much a page-turner as Dan Brown's exciting novels.

The co-authors not only did their homework researching history, they delved deeply into the customs, languages & nuances of Asian, Middle Eastern and South Pacific cultures, not to mention spot-on accuracy regarding aviation itself.

All of this is combined with the skills of two extremely talented wordsmiths, who will actually make you smell exotic flowers or the stench of death & fear.

"Zoe" and "Sally" will take you from their two opposing worlds (one growing up in Burma and the other in South Carolina) through their individual journeys, which eventually leads them to their careers with Pan American World Airways. And that's just the beginning...

"Flying-A Novel" is an exhilarating ride! So, fasten your seat belts and ENJOY!
As a former Pan Am stewardess for 20 years, I know how difficult it is to try to describe the lifestyle that we enjoyed. We often feel that people will think we are (1) exaggerating (2) bragging or (3) just plain lying. We were an unbelievably fortunate group of people who got to experience the magic of flying when it was glamorous, fun, and always a new adventure. But along with all the wonderful perks, there was often danger involved in flying with Pan Am. If it wasn't terrorism, it was our own heartbreaking crashes, corporate mismanagement, chronic economic problems, as well as continuing political unrest in many of the countries that made up our "Pan Am World." Whenever there were problems in the world, Pan Am was there, rescuing the Americans. It was our job, and we all loved our company with a passion that I have never heard of in any other company. Just ask any former Pan Am'er, and you'll see what I mean. Twenty years after Pan Am's demise, the employees worldwide still get together for reunions, cruises, and parties. We all felt that Pan Am gave us the world. Indeed, one of our slogans was "Pan Am has a world of its own. You call it 'the world.' We call it 'home.'" This book "Flying -- A Novel" captures the feeling of the breadth and the scope of our world, as well as some of the inherent dangers we all faced. But even with the element of danger and insecurity, we all felt like we had the best job in the world. I think this book describes our world well.
A novel with all the elements of fictional success with one caveat; one must wonder how much fiction had to be added to the truth to make this a novel! Spanning decades, centuries actually, oceans, continents and wars, this is really a saga built on the legend of Pan Am World Airlines, love, loss and heroism.
